Next, the scrolls are routed to shape using two special fixtures. The necks are clamped sideways, and the
router is rotated over the headstock, with special shaped bits. A series of eccentric discs snap onto the
router base, and ride in the round recesses in the fixtures. It takes 12 operations, with different
combinations of fixtures, discs and bits, for each headstock.
This drill fixture fits around the headstock for drilling the holes for the tuner posts.

Here's some of the sequence of routing the scroll rings. The first three steps use flat bottomed bits to cut away the bulk of the wood and establish the upper edges of the lips of each ring. The next four cuts use custom radiused bits to cut the filleted bottoms of each ring. Note that the ring that forms the outer lip of the headstock is tilted in relation to the center rings.
Here's what the headstock looks like after rough shaping with routers and fixtures is completed. Now comes the hours of hand shaping and smoothing.
